Jeanette Yvonne (Gilchrist) Smith

June 25, 1945 ~ January 27, 2016 (age 70) 70 Years Old

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, Jeanette Yvonne (Gilchrist) Smith peacefully passed from this life to unite with Jesus, The Christ. Jeanette was born on June 25, 1945 in Edgefield, SC to the late Cleveland and Susie Gilchrist affectionately known as “Buddy and Emma”. She had one brother, Calvin Gilchrist who preceded her in death.

At a young age, she relocated to Washington, DC with her parents. She attended DC public schools and graduated from Cardozo High School in 1963. During high school, Jeanette worked as a Cashier at Giant Food grocery store. Upon high school graduation, she entered government service. For 39 years, she served in multiple capacities for agencies to include the Department of the Interior and the Department of Commerce Patent Office. She also worked as a Currency Examiner at the Bureau of Engraving, an Administrative Clerk at the Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice and Personnel Liaison Specialist in the Office of Community Relations, Department of Justice. Her last job, prior to retirement was a Program Analyst at the Department of Homeland Security. During her 39-year tenure in the government, Jeanette was the recipient of several awards for outstanding service.

As the granddaughter of a Southern Baptist reverend, Jeanette had deep spiritual roots. Most recently, she served as a faithful member and supporter of the Greater Works Christian Church and a supporter of Joyce Meyer Ministries. There was something on the inside of Jeanette that was so prevalent, and that was “LOVE” — which was always exhibited on the outside and in her walk with God.
Jeanette was affectionately known as Jenny B, Ginger Bread, Smitty and Joy. She was especially fond of her family and In 1980, she co-founded the Gilchrist Family Club which served to preserve the lineage of the Gilchrist family for future generations. Jeanette was always available to lend a hand to anyone in need. She would provide ‘words of wisdom’ whether solicited or not. She loved to entertain, to dance, play cards and cook. She was the consummate hostess to all who visited her home!

She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved daughter, Robbin Hernandez (Jason); her son Emanuel K. Smith, III (Stacey/deceased); four grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Emanuel IV, Clifton V, and Jazmyn (who affectionally referred to her grandmother as “Apple”); step grandson, Dillon; sister, Ellen Cunningham; godson, Carlos Garner, one goddaughter, Brandy Mathies; niece, Olivia; six aunts and a host of other loving relatives and friends, particularly Janie Young and the late Juanita Mathies.
