Winnie Mae Young

Winnie Mae Young was born December 12, 1921 in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Charles Duke and Annie Bell Williams. To this union she was the youngest of four children, all of whom preceded her in death. After the death of her father, her mother and siblings moved to Washington, DC. She was six years old. Her mother later married the late Marsden Salter and to this union one child was born. Winnie received her education from the public schools in Washington, DC. She was a proud graduate of Cardozo High School, where she and fellow classmates celebrated a yearly class reunion for over sixty years. She retired from the United States Department of Labor in 1977 after serving for over thirty years. After retirement, she dedicated many hours of community service, including as a volunteer for the Visiting Nurse Association of Washington, DC. At an early age, Winnie gave her life to Christ. Later in life, she became a member of Second New St. Paul Baptist Church. In September 1973, she joined Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Sidney T. Yancey. She was a very active member in her church. She held the following positions and offices in the Body of Christ: Assistant Church Clerk, Bulletin Clerk, and Secretary for various groups including the Senior Citizens Ministry. Winnie found joy in singing. She was a member of the Christianaires, Church Chorus and Sanctuary Choir. She remained faithful to the ministries of her church until she was no longer able to participate. She met and married the late John T. Young, and this union was blessed with three children: Ann, Delores, and Michael. She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Ann Elizabeth Coles (Howard) and Delores Johnetta Ham; a son, Michael D. Young (Liz); eight grandchildren, Ronald Ham, Ann Beth Brown (Andre), Robin Jackson (Tony), Andre Richardson, Roslyn Ham-Cross (Kevin), Howard Coles II (Vennessea), Michelle Robinson (Derrick), and Delores Figgs (Clarence); twenty-two great-grandchildren; and ten great-great- grandchildren; one sister, Annie Malone (Franklin); and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Adrienne Coles.
