Samuel Roland Joyce

November 21, 1929 ~ May 29, 2013 (age 83) 83 Years Old


Samuel (Sam) Roland Joyce was born on November 21, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland to the union of Naomi Johnson Hopewell and Roland Joyce. He departed this life on May 29, 2013 at the Southern Maryland Hospital Center after a brief illness.

Sam received his primary education in the Baltimore public school system and continued to receive his college education at Virginia State University.

From his union with JoAnne Peters (King) he was blessed with the two sons, Duan C. Joyce (deceased) and Darryl W. Joyce (Barbara).  From his union with B. Brenda Joyce, he was blessed with three stepchildren, Nathanial R. Williams (deceased), Cynthia Bonita Williams, and Babette D. Williams.

Sam worked as an employment placement specialist for the Department of Human Services, D.C. Rehabilitation Services Administration until his retirement.  He was an enthusiastic sports fan and held season tickets for Washington Redskin football games throughout his life.  Sam was also a proud member of the Virginia State University Alumni Association and a Life Member of the Virginia State University Athletic Boosters Club.  His 60th class reunion was scheduled for this year.  Additionally, Sam was a member and officer of Bowl America where he won numerous awards and trophies. 

Sam is survived by his sister Frances Johnson Williams, son Darryl W. Joyce and his wife Barbara, step-daughters Cynthia Bonita Williams and Babette D. Williams, nieces Phyllis Sharps (Milton Purcell), Fran Barron (Henry), Thelma Dillard (Kenneth), nephew Clinton E. Fells (Penny Ellamar), grandchildren Shawna Williams, Natalie Williams, Jennifer A Joyce, Omar Barnes, Donita Joyner, Donnie Joyner Jr. numerous great grandchildren, great nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.  Also mourning his passing are his lifelong friends, George Hampton who was like a brother for over 60 years and his wife JoAnne, Eddie Britt and his wife Ruth, Ulysses Braxton and his caretakers Michael Belton and Frances Smalls.

Sam was preceded in death by Naomi Esther Hopewell, Roland Joyce, George Henry Hopewell, and Stanley Williams.
